Indian Government allowing exports of Bangalore Rose Onions and Krishnapuram onions up to 10000 tons.

ATM New Network: Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification on 9th Oct 2020 allowing the export of Bangalore Rose Onions and Krishnapuram onions. The Export is allowed for a limited period i.e up to March 31, 2021. Export of these varieties is allowed only from the port of Chennai. The Customs authorities at the Chennai Port will allow export of Bangalore Rose Onions and Krishnapuram onions on the basis of a certificate from Horticulture Commissioner of Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh respectively along with registration certificate from Office of Additional DGFT, Bangalore & Additional DGFT, Chennai.
Farmers of Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh had urged the Centre to allow shipment of above both varieties as there is no demand in the domestic market. This variety has demand in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. Generally, Krishnapuram onions are not used for consumption in India due to their size and pungency. The onions are imported by Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore.
